In 2024, Neptune’s Kingdom at Joyland in Great Yarmouth celebrated a milestone—50 wonderful years of enchanting visitors. Since opening its storybook frontage in 1974, it has welcomed thousands annually, promising timeless charm and thrilling underwater adventures.
Nestled beneath Toy Town, this iconic dark ride has been a must-visit at Joyland for generations. Recent updates, including a five-year refurbishment and overhaul, have enhanced the attraction, balancing nostalgic appeal with a modern, immersive experience.

Crafting an Underwater Wonderland
Since its debut in 1974, Neptune’s Kingdom has stood the test of time, captivating visitors with its unique blend of nostalgia and storytelling. Its recent refurbishment is a testament to Joyland’s commitment to keeping the magic alive while embracing innovation.
At its heart, Neptune’s Kingdom offers an enchanting underwater journey. Families embark on a dark ride adventure that takes them into an oceanic realm. Vibrant coral reefs, whimsical sea creatures, and the enigmatic figure of Neptune himself enchant visitors with every turn. Other highlights include playful dolphins, schools of shimmering fish, a “pooping skeleton”, and even an exciting encounter with an attacking shark.
Studios East, led by designer Daniel, collaborated with the Joyland team to completely reimagine the ride’s visuals. Every detail, from the bioluminescent lighting to the swirling underwater textures, was carefully crafted to immerse guests in the magic of the deep sea. While some of these details are hard to fully appreciate during the ride, each set and prop has been made with attention to detail. The team plans to highlight these in the future by slowing down the ride.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of operators and technicians ensures the attraction runs smoothly. Lighting, sound effects, and animatronics are monitored daily to deliver a seamless and magical experience.
